Indigenous Philanthropy Fellow

Summary of Position: The core purpose of the Indigenous Philanthropy Fellow position is to advance Movement Infrastructure Support (MIS) initiatives. This 10 month part-time fellowship paid position that seeks to help support the implementation of the 2025 Open Call grant cycle, which is focused on two themes: Alaska Native Languages and Resistance. The Fellow is committed to creating lasting change in Indigenous communities and beyond by uniting our collective efforts across multiple disciplines. Fellow will gain experience with participatory grant making processes, social justice oriented community organizing, and resourcing the broader ongoing efforts of movement builders. We would like to mentor and connect future leaders and change makers to inform and shape the realm of Indigenous-led philanthropy.

Essential Job Functions

● Supporting 2025 Open Call grants recruitment, processing, review, and compliance

● Maintain detailed records and data, such as digital files for grantees, tracking payments, and collecting images

● Facilitate ongoing learning and outreach with grant partners, such as answering emails and phone calls with grantees and potential grantees

● Assist with impact storytelling, such as collecting stories from project partners, drafting content such as blogs, or visual storytelling media.

This position will report to the Movement Infrastructure Redistribution Lead. No supervision exercised.

Work Environment and Demands of the Role

This position will work primarily on-site in the Anchorage office, with some remote work flexibility. Generally, the office environment is calm, with some days of higher activity due to organizational events. Some noise from people in the office is expected, and may increase during events. We are a family-friendly workplace, so children of all ages may be present at any time. Dogs are allowed in the office, so there may be occasional barking and dogs walking throughout the building. Possibility of a flexible schedule and may need to be available for evenings and/or weekends.

The physical demands of this position require the ability to occasionally remain in a stationary position, move or traverse throughout an office and event spaces. Occasionally must be able to transport objects through the office for various needs. Must be able to commute to and from an office and event space. Requires the ability to ascend a flight of stairs, several times a day. Additionally, the employee must be able to exchange information and ideas so that others will understand, receive and understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, and exercise independent judgment.

Job Qualifications:

● Maintain confidentiality related to individual grantee information

● Some familiarity and comfort with budgets

● Some event coordination experience

● Experience working with rural and Alaska Native communities

● Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a team

● Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).

● Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)

● Effective and clear communication style in English. (Experience learning Alaska Native languages is a plus)

● Self-starter who shows initiative and is eager to advance NM’s work

● Strong work ethic and ability to plan ahead yet be flexible

● Process & detail-oriented and extremely well-organized

● Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain relationships with partners across the community

● Familiarity with the concept of decolonization and healing-centered approaches

Additional Job Information

This position requires regular attendance in accordance with the established schedule as this is the most common time to conduct business with customers, vendors, and employees.
